The latest recording from the group of Salvationist bandsmen known as Fuoco Brass features as their guest Leslie Neish, of Foden’s Band. He presents five contrasting solos, demonstrating both his dexterity and his beautiful tone across the full range of the instrument. 

A selection of contemporary works which have been commissioned by Tubalate over the last 15 years showcasing the dexterity and technique of the quartet with many of the works requiring extended techniques

Fun and games all the way with some outstanding players of the tuba. Old favourites such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Air from a Suite in D, Scarborough Fair and Deep Harmony are all given a bit of make over tuba style. The title track is ten minutes of real class.

Tubalate has commissioned a number of original works from British Composers and amongst the twenty six items during the seventy five minutes (good value for money) of music on this CD are some of the compositions.

The provocative and seductive Seguidilla aria from the French opera, Carmen by Georges Bizet arranged for Les Neish requires lightness, agility and character to be successful.

For symphonic Brass in a bright key, this introit fanfare is the ideal way to open a ceremonial or dignified occasion of any kind. 

meaning "Hail, true body", is a short Eucharistic Hymn dating from the 14th century which, set in its original key of D Major, lends itself well to the brass medium.

Arranged at the request of Tuba virtuoso Les Neish, Czardas is a traditional Hungarian Folk Dance and also a virtuosic famous solo work from the pen of Vittorio Monti.

The popular Arban variations on Carnival of Venice has been arranged for solo tuba and wind orchestra.  This arrangement allows the soloist to play the solo from the Arban copy without having to transpose any of the solo part

Written especially for Tubalaté. The composer has used his visits, observations and feelings about the northern fells for his inspiration.

Commissioned by Tubalaté, Tubafication is a bebop-style piece. The work involves a small amount of improvisation (help is offered by the composer!).

The Basics, as it’s title suggests, calls on the performers to draw on the basics of performance – scales, chords and rhythms.

March – FroT was commissioned by Tubalaté as way of a thank you to their FROT’s (Friends of Tubalaté) for their continued support. The march is written in a traditional brass band contest march.

Roy’s second work for tuba quartet is dedicated to Tubalaté. The work is written in Salvationist style, using the tune, O be Joyful in the Lord.

A work which will help form the core repertoire of any tuba-euphonium quartet.

This is a jazzy piece – showing the funky side to tubas and euphoniums.

This is a four movement work in lighter vein. The movements are: Tango, Foxtrot, Waltz and Charleston.

This is a slow, sentimental ballad showing the sweet side of the instruments.

The first of a series of three pieces (Dancing, Crying, Walking). Dancing Music uses African rhythms and harmonies entwining a melody that is almost straight from the pen of Aaron Copland.

A set of variations based on an old Yiddish folk song. The piece offers an option for the first euphonium to sing the melody! A fun, flamboyant, foot-tapper.

This piece opens with a fanfare section and then develops the theme through a waltz, rag-time and fugue.

A popular item with audiences, Octave Variations gives each member a chance to enjoy the limelight.

Naftel’s own version of the Carnival of the Animals – including snakes, preying mantis, dogs, the fly and, of course, the elephant! Two movements are for solo instruments – which gives everybody else a quick breather – not to mention a different sound world for your audience!

The piece evokes memories from the past : memories of a vanished brass band echoing through northern english streets, fragments of Tommy Dorsey heard from a 1950’s wireless, childhood bands of mouth organs, singers and whistlers, and letters found in newspapers sent from people trying to trace lost friends and relatives.

This is an arrangement of the very popular ballad taken from Puccini’s Turandot.

Probably the most popular movements taken from Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. The Swan uses the melodic virtues of the euphonium and the Elephant uses the magnificent rumblings of the tuba.

This is Nicky’s first foray into composition. Written in a minimalist style – the work opens with a lone tuba repeated cell and develops building to a soaring melody over an exciting and agitated rhythmic ensemble. The title track from Tubalaté’s third CD, Move was commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in 1999. The work encompasses a collection of musical ideas and spoken extracts that combine to result in a work that creates an emotional space, with fragments of memory – an ambiance!
