Following on from the success of the 2017 FTBBSS #ONTOUR events the first of the 2018 tour dates have been announced.

Open to ages 7-18 and players of all abilities Les Neish, Stephen Crooks and Owen Farr will lead a Youth Workshop on Wednesday 18th July in Belfast.

Participants will have the chance to take part in full rehearsals, sectionals and even have the chance to sign up for private tuition.

Fermanagh / Tyrone Summer School tutors will be landing into Belfast through the day and will be heading straight to the workshop to take part.

The day will conclude with a short concert featuring the workshop band, solos from Kathleen Gaspoz and Owen Farr and the FTBBSS Tutor Group will make an appearance too!!

This free event is not to be missed if you are in Northern Ireland!

After a challenging week for many with bad weather conditions across the UK, RNCM Young Tubas took place and many players braved the conditions to make it in for the session. One dedicated player set off at 4am from Southampton to make it. What dedication!

Our efforts were rewarded as one young player (who was celebrating her birthday the next day) brought in sweets for us all to enjoy!

After a fun and informative session from Les and RNCM students James and Conall, the students performed a piece for their family. There could only be one choice after the past week. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Cory Band's principal tubist, Simon Howell, puts the Les Neish Signature Alliance Mouthpiece series for Eb tuba through its paces, with pleasing results.

Having been sent a tuba mouthpiece to review, I was very keen to get it open and have a good look, and I was pleased to see that it was the Les Neish Signature Series by Alliance. My initial thoughts were great; the standard of packaging complemented the classy finish of the mouthpiece and there was the added bonus of a free leather mouthpiece pouch.

This specific mouthpiece was silver-plated with a gold rim and cup, aesthetically pleasing to say the least. Whilst trying the mouthpiece, it became immediately apparent that it was very comfortable to play with a fantastic tone quality, which was rich and full in all ranges. I found it very responsive and agile, especially playing in the high register, as well as having great projection.

The ‘LN Alliance’ Mouthpiece resembles many of the good features of my mouthpiece of choice for many years - the Vincent Bach 24AW, including having the same cup diameters of 31.25mm and similar depths. This is certainly a versatile mouthpiece that could cope in many settings - I personally would feel comfortable using it in a band, in an orchestra in a chamber ensemble or for solos on Eb Tuba.Overall, this is an extremely well-presented, versatile and comfortable mouthpiece with a great quality finish and a very streamlined look,
which lays in the same price bracket as many other leading tuba mouthpieces.

After some fun warm up games the group created a brand new piece from scratch and also rehearsed 2 ensemble pieces and a hymn tune. This was all performed in a mini-concert for parents at the end of the session. The next Young Tubas is Sunday 19th November. Don’t miss it!!

Pete Meechan’s Beatles-inspired Tuba Sonata One Sweet Dream is now available on Tuba-Artist.com. Premiered at the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Tennesse the piece was the result of a co-commission which included an illustrious list of tuba players.

MusicMania 2017 concluded in style at the weekend with a fantastic outdoor concert at Myddelton College, Denbigh.
Organised by the Denbighshire Music Co-Operative, the course had 120 young performers taking part in various fun activities, including working with beatboxer Ed Holden and Graffiti artist Andy Birch. They also played in ensembles including the DMC Pop Band. Percussion Ensemble, Performing Arts Griup, Training Orchestra and Brass Band.
Each afternoon consisted of sports activities with a visit from two commandos who put everyone (including staff) through their paces!
Les was a tutor on the course alongside his colleagues fromTubalaté working with players in the Brass band
With the dates for 2018 already in the diary, next year can’t come quickly enough!
